Joseph Raymond McCarthy was born on November 14,1908 in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. Joseph was the fifth of seven sons. His mother was Bridget Tierney who was from Ireland and his father who was Timothy McCarthy who was born in the United States. Joseph dropped out of school when he was 14 to help his family with the farm. Although he dropped out he reentered when he was 20 and graduated in one year. He started college studying engineering but he earned a law degree at Marquette University and was elected as a judge. At age 33 he volunteered for the US Marine Corps and served during World War 2.
A few years later he joined the senate, which a few years later led to his historically famous speech where he claimed that he had a "list of members of the communist party and members of a spy ring" who were working in the state department. That speech later on led to McCarthyism and started the Second Red Scare. Although these accussations gained a lot of attention, McCarthy's fame died down and the senate voted to censor McCarthy. McCarthy died a few years later on May 2,1957 from Acute Hepatitis, which many people would say from from his alcoholism.
