McCarthyism started out in the late 1940s and progressed more through the 1950s. It was based on making accussations on the government or famous people that looked to be involved with communism but without proving any of this with evidence. It was usually based on people who were taught to be disloyal to the government or state or to be committing treason. But it was mainly the accussations of the communist trying to take over the country. This brought on the Second Red Scare which scared people into thinking that communism was going to take over.
During this period many people were accussed of being communist but they had no proof. Which is on the reasons why this event is compared to the Salem witch trials and the condemn of innocent people. Those that were accussed were investigated and questioned before the government. Some of the accussed were accussed of having a connection with communist. They accussed and investigated mainly government employees, entertainment industries, educators and union activists. By also accusing these people they exaggerated that they were dangerous people. Many people lost their jobs, and some were even put in jail.
